Emigrating to Indonesia: An overview of the political system

Indonesia is the country with the fourth largest population in the world, the second largest Muslim population and the third largest democracy. The approximately 270 million inhabitants live on 6,000 of the archipelago's more than 17,000 islands. The constitution guarantees religious freedom for six officially recognized religions and is based on the state doctrine "Pancasila".

Since the declaration of independence from the Netherlands in 1945, Indonesia has been a presidential republic. After the end of the authoritarian "New Order" under Soeharto, Indonesia has implemented comprehensive political reforms towards democracy since 1998. The president is directly elected every five years. The last election was held on February 14, 2024, and the final result is expected to be announced on March 20, 2024. According to preliminary counts, the current Minister of Defense Subianto Prabowo achieved the majority of votes (approx. 58%).

Indonesia's 38 provinces have numerous powers of self-government. Provinces with extended autonomy status are Aceh, the provinces on the Indonesian part of the island of New Guinea (Papua, Papua Barat, Papua Pegunungan, Papua Tengah and Papua Selatan), the special capital district of Jakarta and the special region of Yogyakarta, which is governed by a sultan.

Climate in Indonesia: Important information for emigrants

Indonesia has a tropical climate, although the heat is somewhat tempered by sea winds. The average annual temperature is around 27°C. However, temperatures vary depending on the region: in the coastal areas they are around 24-35°C, inland 20-30°C and in the mountains 16-26°C. Humidity is generally high and it often cools down considerably at night in the mountains. The rainy and dry seasons are determined by the east and west monsoon. Jakarta has a hot climate with high humidity all year round.

Healthcare system in Indonesia: Important facts for emigrants

While there are many advantages to living in Indonesia, finding and financing adequate healthcare can be a challenge. Public hospitals are generally not up to the standards that expats from Western countries are used to. Private hospitals are usually a better choice as they offer a higher quality of care, but these benefits are usually reflected in higher costs. Comprehensive health insurance cover is therefore essential for all expats moving to Indonesia.

Emigrating to Indonesia: An overview of the economic situation and quality of life

In Indonesia, the gross domestic product per capita amounted to around 4,492.36 US dollars in 2023. The Gini coefficient of wealth describes the distribution of wealth. The indicator is an established, internationally comparable measure of wealth inequality. It is measured on a scale from zero to one. The higher the value, the greater the inequality. The Gini coefficient in Indonesia is expected to be 0.38 in 2024 (source: Statista).

Indonesia consists of over 17,000 islands, of which around 6,000 are inhabited. For many who wish to emigrate to Indonesia, the country offers a unique blend of cultural diversity and scenic beauty. Despite the overall positive development of recent years, there are still considerable regional differences. The main island of Java is the political and economic center of the Indonesian archipelago. In the past, little was invested in infrastructure, education and basic social security on the other islands. However, this has changed in the last ten years. Nevertheless, the differences in development have not yet been completely eliminated. Emigrating to Indonesia offers the opportunity to experience this dynamic at first hand and to participate in the many opportunities that the country offers.

Indonesian independence

India gained its independence on August 15, 1947, but the country's constitution, the so-called "Constitution of India", only came into force on January 26, 1950.

Relocation of the capital

The world's largest island nation is moving its seat of government from Java to Borneo, to a planned metropolis called Nusantara. In Jakarta, traffic is an omnipresent issue, much like the weather in other cities. The question of how long it takes to get to work and back is omnipresent. A person who is born in Jakarta and spends their life there spends an average of ten years of their life in traffic jams.

This could all change in Nusantara. The new capital, which is being built on the island of Borneo, should avoid many of Jakarta's problems. The current capital is located on the coast and is therefore heavily affected by flooding; it is also sinking further and further over the years. Although the new capital will also be located on the coast, the risk of flooding there is much lower.
